Gas vs Electric Geyser Cost in India – Running Cost Comparison for Indian Homes

Written by admin

Opt for a gas geyser only when the electricity costs are high in your area. A prime example of that is in case you wish to heat 25 litres of water from 20 to 45 degrees Celsius, you need approximately 0.7 kWh of heat.

In case electricity costs ₹8 per unit. The basic heating expense will come to approximately ₹5.81. The final amount can be slightly higher once normal heat loss is taken into account.

LPG may cost a little less. At a Delhi cylinder price of ₹942 for 14.2 kg, the same job comes to roughly ₹4.63 with an 80% efficient heater.

If the heater is only 62% efficient, though, the cost moves up to around ₹5.97. So the answer is not the same for every home. What you pay for electricity locally can easily change which option is cheaper.

Is gas cheaper than an electric geyser?

At ₹6 per unit, that heat costs around ₹4.36. At ₹8, it costs ₹5.81. If your rate is ₹10 per unit, you are looking at about ₹7.27.

Those are basic energy figures. A storage home water geyser will lose some heat through the tank and pipes, so actual electricity use can be slightly higher.

Gas has losses too. A gas water heater sends some heat out with the exhaust. BIS testing information says thermal efficiency for the relevant domestic gas water heater standard should not be below 62%.

At the current Delhi Indane price of Rs. 942 for a 14.2 kg domestic cylinder, our 25-litre heating example costs approximately Rs. 5.97 in case the heater is 62% effective. At 80% efficiency, it decreases to approximately Rs. 4.63.

That is the comparison worth remembering. At a low electricity tariff, electric can compete well. Once the tariff increases, an effective gas heater may cost less when it comes to per bath session.

●     What is the unit usage of electricity for a 2000W geyser?

A 2000W power rating can be seen for Symphony’s SOUL, SAUNA, and SPA storage models on its website. All are available in 10L, 15L, and 25L capacity sizes. If run continuously for one hour, it would use 2 units.

This is an important point when comparing an electric geyser. A 2000W rating does not mean it consumes two units every time you take a bath. Time matters.

Why does Symphony SPA cost more?

The three ranges do not have exactly the same controls.

SPA comes with an AI-enabled gesture-control touch panel.

Symphony also lists ambient lighting and a child-safety lock among its features. SOUL uses a knob and has an LED temperature display, while SAUNA uses a temperature-control knob with lighting.

All three come with 2000W power, a 5-star BEE rating, and an 8-bar pressure rating. You can also see PUROPOD filtration as part of these three brands.

So, paying more for SPA is mainly about the additional controls and features, not extra tank capacity or a higher heating wattage.

Does a 5-star geyser save electricity?

A 5-star rating matters in a storage heater because hot water does not stay hot forever.

Symphony lists its SPA, SOUL and SAUNA models with a 5-star BEE rating. It also uses PUF insulation to slow heat loss from the tank. Symphony says the insulation helps keep hot water warm for longer.

That makes insulation worth checking when shopping for an energy-efficient geyser.

But how you use the heater still counts. Heat 25 litres when you only want 10, and you have energy on water that you hardly will use.

Which geyser is good for a bathroom?

Tank size comes first when choosing a geyser for bathroom use.

A 10L model stores less hot water and can work where usage is light. A 15L gives you more. A 25L tank is useful when a family needs a larger quantity of hot water or has back-to-back bathing.

Symphony offers SOUL, SAUNA, and SPA in all three sizes. The company gives each an 8-bar pressure rating and describes them as suitable for high-rise buildings with high-pressure requirements.

Do not automatically buy 25L because it sounds better.

●     What about a kitchen water heater?

A kitchen usually needs hot water in smaller quantities.

You might want it for oily utensils, washing hands, or cleaning during winter. In that case, there may be no reason to keep a 25L tank ready, and the 25 litre geyser price will be reasonable.

You can also see the SWISH Instant model listed on the Symphony website with a 5.9L capacity.

Its current starting price listed on the Symphony website is  ₹5,491, against an MRP of ₹9,999 at the time of writing this piece of content. It comes with 3000W and is ideal for small spaces or individuals needing hot water swiftly.

That makes a smaller kitchen water heater worth considering when the requirement is limited.

Final Thoughts – Which one costs less in your home?

Look at the rate printed on your electricity bill.

If you are paying about ₹6 per unit, heating our example 25 litres costs roughly ₹4.36 before normal losses. At ₹8, it is ₹5.81. At ₹10, it becomes ₹7.27.

The comparable LPG figure is about ₹4.63 at 80% efficiency or ₹5.97 at the minimum 62% efficiency used in our calculation, based on Delhi’s ₹942 cylinder price.

So, gas can save money where electricity is costly. It does not automatically win everywhere.

If you prefer an electric model, Symphony’s current 25L choices sit at three clear price points: SOUL at ₹11,491, SAUNA at ₹11,991, and SPA at ₹16,491.

Check those two things before buying: what energy costs are where you live and how much hot water your family actually needs.
